GAR Veteran Dies
Old friends in large numbers gathered at the funeral of Henry A.
Bassett, old-time citizen and Civil War veteran on Wed. afternoon July 9 at
Kampp's Chapel on Penn. Ave.
Mr. Bassett, who would have been 90 in Nov. passed away Mon. morning
July 7 at his home 427 Anthony after an illness of a month. Rev. O.L.
Kiplinger of the First Cong. Church officiated. Mrs. S. Pulse, assisted by Mrs. Black
sang "The City Town Square & ??? With Me."
Interment at Forest Hill Cemetery. Members of Post 3, American Legion
served as pall bearers. Leslie Robey, Frank Newton, Jack O'Donnell, Richard
Dolton, Lester Le Messurier and Charles LePage.
Survived by his wife, Mrs. Rolina Bassett, one son, Louis & four
grandchildren. Mrs. Bassett is 86 years old and ill.
The deceased was a volunteer in the Civil War, enlisting in Wisconsin.
He joined a Cavalry regiment and did scout and picket duty, with the rank of
sergeant, thru the period of war. He was one of those in the circle of
soldiers surrounding the barn in which John Wilkes Booth was captured. He was
very modest in talking about his war record and those who loved him best
hadn't an authentic record of his service.
The flag at half mast for the loyal and patriotic man marked the
passing of one of the fast diminishing host? of the Nation defenders.
