Mr. Preston Bass
Deceased at 512 Western Ave., Monday Night
The sad news of the death of Mr. Preston Bass is shocking to his many friends. Mr. Bass has for the last five years undergone a siege of great suffering, caused from his system being deranged, hence from this cause he could not recover and succumbed to his illness, as above stated. Mr. Bass was an old citizten, highly respected, having been one of the early settlers of this city.
He leaves a wife and son, J.B. Bass, in this city, while he has a mother and other relatives who reside at Fulton, MO. The funeral was conducted from St. John?s Chruch. Our sympathy to the bereaved family circle and to his many friends. Peace to his ashes.

Robt. Bass was a caller Wednesday and in speaking of his brother, Preston Bass, who died recently in Topeka, he said that his brother and his brother?s young master married half sisters. A slave holder near their home plantation had two daughters, one by his wife and one by a woman slave. Edwin Bass, the young master, married the young white daughter and Preston Bass, the slave boy, married the mulatto daughter. Her photograph indicates that Mrs. Preston Bass is a very good looking and intelligent woman. Such are the results of human slavery. This is only one of the thousands of similar cases that exist. ? A Brown Family History states that Preston Bass was the father of Albert Bass and Susan Bass was Albert's mother. The plantation they lived on was the Bass Plantation (or Forest Hill Plantation) owned by Peter Bass and later by his son, Eli E. Bass. Other information lists Albert Bass as the father and brother of Preston Bass.
Find-A-Grave says that Susan Spencer Bass Thompson was born into slavery on the Eli Bass plantation in Boone County, Missouri. She died in an "old folks home" in Watt, California in 1920. She was married three times. First husband was Albert Bass until his death during the Civil War. They had four children. She then married Preston Bass until his death in 1895. Preston and Susan Bass raised their nephew, JB (Joseph Blackburn) Bass, as their son. Her third husband was Joseph Thompson.
