All the men of the family were railroad workers, mostly in the shops.
Harry became a master mechanic, Edward a sheetmetalsmith, John a boilermaker
and William was a brakeman. When their union lost their strike in 1922, John
Sr., John Jr. and Edward were black-balled and had to find other work. John,
Sr. returned to his farm, John Jr. became a dairyman and Edward opened his own
plumbing and roofing business. Neither Harry nor William was involved in the
strike. About five years after their marriage, Elizabeth and her husband Mark
moved to Arizona where he became a rancher and in his later years a cattle
buyer. Jennie's husband Thomas was an engineman all his life, working out of
Palestine. Edna's husband, Emory was with the railroad also, he worked out of
San Antonio.
John Foree Bassett died 11 September 1923 and his wife Elizbeth on 16
March 1934.
All these people are buried in the Palestine City Cemetery except Edna
and Elizabeth. Edna and her husband are buried in San Antonio, Elizabeth and
Mark in Safford, Arizona.
