Lucia Bassett was a native of Connecticut where she was born May 18,
1813. She was a sister of Abel Barnum of Albion. They were distantly related
to P.T. Barnum, the noted showman. When she was a child she moved with her
parents to Sullivan County, N.Y., where in 1831 she married Hiram F. Bassett.
He died in Albion in 1881. In 1835 they left New York and came to Michigan
where they remained one year. In 1836 they settled in York Twp., Noble County
where they lived until a short time before his death when they left the farm
and moved into town. She was the mother of a son and a daughter. The son is
living on the old homestead, the daughter died 22 years ago leaving 2
daughters and a son. The daughters found a home with their grandmother. She
was a charter member of the Albion Presbyterian Church.
