      The History of Aurora County, Andreas' Historical Atlas of Dakota (1884)

      Messrs. Bassett, Hunting and Co. of McGregor, Iowa erected a grain
      elevator with a grain capacity of 40,000 bushels in August 1883. The business
      in Plankinton managed by D.D. Fraser.

      Bassett was named after one of the firm of Bassett & Hunting, a
      extensive wheat buying firm along the line of the railroad, they both living
      in McGregor.

      Mendon Township, James Bassett was born in Sag Harbor, Long Island, on
      the 5th day of November, 1824, and was a son of John and Frances P. (Fordham)
      Bassett. His father was a native of Connecticut, and a soldier in the war of
      1812; his mother, a native of Long Island. The subject of this memoir came to
      Clayton County in 1857, where he has been actively engaged in business
      pursuits since. In 1857 he married Dorliska F. Conkling, a daughter of
      Jedediah Conkling, of Long Island. Mr. and Mrs. Bassett are the parents of
      three living children -- Kate, Bertha and Georgia. Mr. Bassett is a member of
      the Masonic Fraternity, Bezer Lodge, No. 135, and was a member of the
      convention that nominated James A. Garfield.

      Long Island Obituary Record

      Sag Harbor, L.I. - James F. Bassett died at his home in Minneapolis,
      Minn. Monday last, aged over 70 years. Mr. Bassett was a native of Sag Harbor
      and spent his early life here. He was one of the California argonauts in '49
      and on his return settled in McGregor, Ia., and went into the wheat business
      with William F. Huntting, a native of Southampton, continuing until abo
      twelve years ago, and conducting one of the largest enterprises of this kind
      in the West. On the death of Mr. Huntting, Mr. Bassett removed to Minneapolis
      and formed the co-partnership of Commons, Bassett & Co. Mr. Bassett married a
      daughter of the late Jedediah Conklin of this village and has always spent his
      summers here and owned the finest residence in the village, overlooking the
      bay, on the site of Mrs. Bassett's former home.
