John Nelson Bassett
Died at Canton, N.Y., Monday, February 26th, 1900, John Nelson Bassett, aged
86 years, 29 days.
John N. Bassett was born at Jay, Essex Co., N.Y., January 29th, 1815 - the
year of Waterloo. He removed with his parents to Canton at the age of twelve,
and has made his home here ever since, living for a greater part of the time
on a farm south of this village. About 1850 he was joined in wedlock with
Miss Elmira Rawson, of Norfolk, who died in 1882. The fruits of this union
were four children, viz., Dr. John N. Bassett and Rufus H. Bassett, the
laundryman, of this village, and a son who died in infancy, also a daughter
who died about 32 years ago.
Mr. Bassett has lived in this village with son, Dr. J. N. Bassett, for the
past fifteen years. He was a quiet, unassuming old gentleman who had many
friends and probably not an enemy in the world. He had been a member of the
M.E. Church all his long life and died a communicant of that faith. The
funeral will take place at Dr. Bassett's residence, Wednesday at 1:30 p.m.,
Rev. Chas. Sheard officiating. Interment at Fairview Cemetery.
