Bassett, Moses F., physician and surgeon, office, 629 Hampshire
street; residence, Tremont House. He was born in Windsor county, Vermont, June
27, 1821. At the age of fifteen he chose the medical profession, and went to
Albany, New York, pursuing the necessary literary and medical studies at
Albany, and Worcester, Mass. Practiced medicine in Barnstable county, Mass.,
from 1841 till 1853; came to Quincy in 1853 and has been actively engaged here
in his profession ever since. During the war of the Rebellion he was a surgeon
in the Government service for the fourth district of Illinois, and afterward
for several years Pension Surgeon. He is not in any sense a politician and
devotes all his time and energies to his profession.

BASSETT AVENUE - BROADWAY AVENUE
Broadway was originally plotted as Bassett Avenue and was changed to
the name Broadway by the previously mentioned Ordinance No. 77 on July 10,
1885. It was named for Doctor M.F. Bassett, of Quincy, Illinois, Vice
President of the Great Bend Town Company and a partner with Dr. Charles R.S.
Curtis in the practice of medicine.
Moses F. Bassett M.D. was born in Windsor County, Vermont, June 27,
1821, into a large family of moderate circumstances.
At the age of 15, having selected the medical profession for his
occupation, young Bassett moved to Albany, New York and worked for two years
while studying Physiology, Latin, Chemistry, Botany and other studies that he
thought would prepare him for the study and practice of Medicin
Procuring some medical books, he taught a country district school for
the winter returning to Albany in the spring; became a student in a physician's
office. After more study and attendance at Albany Medical College he moved to
Barnstable, Massachusetts where he practiced 2 years. He then enrolled in the
Medical College at Worcester, Mass. from which he graduated. He then located
in Quincy, Illinois.
It was while he worked with Dr. Charles R.S. Curtis that the two men
became interested in organizing the Great Bend Town Company and in investing
in a large tract of land in Barton County and the town of Great Bend. Since
neither gentlemen lived or occupied a residence on the town site they did not
receive any lots in the apportionment.
