One hundred and thirty years after William Bassett landed at Plymouth,
Mass., there was born to Orville Pierce Bassett of Knoxville, Knox County,
Ill., and his wife Celestia Thomas Bassett, a pair of twin girls. This event
occurred on Dec. 21, 1850. They were given the names of Emma Frances and Ella
Fanny. Emma Frances was to become my grandmother, the mother of my mother.
Thanks to a grandson of Ella Fanny by the name of Samuel Malcolm Sargent, we
have an account of a number of related families. He has traced many of them
back to early New England.
Orville Pierce Bassett, my great grandfather, was a wagon and carriage
maker, a good mechanic, a member of the Congregational Church, never
neglecting family worship. An interesting letter written by him on April 6,
1851, tells of his business transactions and prospects, the twin baby girls
and life in Knoxville, Ill. A copy of this letter may be found at the end of
my story in the appendix.
The wedding of my grandparents on December 16, 1869, at Knoxville,
Ill. was unusual in that not only one couple was married but it was a triple
wedding. Emma and Ella Bassett and their brother Edwin Bassett married William
McCandless Woods, Samuel Stauffer McBridge and Stauffer's sister Mollie
McBride. They all went to Peoria, Ill. for their honeymoo
My grandfather Woods had attended Knox College at Galesburg, Il
Grandmother and her twin sister Ella had attended St. Mary's School for Girls
at Knoxville, Ill. Another set of twin.........
