His farm adjoined his brothers' farms along the east bank of the Kennebec River at Moscow, Maine. He built his house before he was married. He was appointed postmaster at West Moscow, Maine on 17 Oct 1861. The document, signed M. Blair (Montgomery Blair, Postmaster General of the United States under President Abraham Lincoln) is in the possession of his grandson, G.N. Bassett. About 1869 he sold his house and farm to his niece Octavia Bassett Hill and her husband Charles Hill, and with his wife and children moved to Iowa, settling in Chickasaw County, near the present site of Fredericksburg. At first they put up a log house, but soon had a good frame dwelling. Here Joseph Bassett engaged in farming until his death. He made one visit back to Moscow, Maine, about a year before his death.
