Notes - On 28 Sep 1759 John Bassett and Joseph Carver, husbandman of
Bridgewater, bought a lot in Providence, Rhode Island on Town Street. On 5 Feb
1774 John and wife Sarah sold his half interest to Carver. While of
Bridgewater in 1767, John bought of Barnard Haile in Scituate, Rhode Island, a
farm where he lived until 1777. On 8 March 1777 John Bassett of Scituat
Rhode Island bought 53 acres on Quinebog River, Killingly, Connecticut. The
1790 census gives his family in Killingly as 4.1.3.
In his will written 8 Jan 1799 and proven 9 Mar 1799, he leaves to son
John: 1 yoke of oxen, two cows, two year old steers, plus 1/4 his farm
utensils. Son Oliver received 1 yoke of oxen, 2 cows, plus 1/4 his farm
utensils. Both John and Oliver received equally a pew in the new meeting
"being the pew which John bid off". Son David received all his father's land
and building except the "privilege" (a room and ample supply of firewood left
his wife as long as she lived), and land previously deeded John and Oliver,
plus 1/2 his farming utensils. Five Warren grandchildren: Oliver, Benjamin,
Roxanna, Isaac, and Eunice -- grandchildren of his deceased daughter, Eunice,
each received a legacy of $33.34 "to be paid males when they arrived at the
age of 21 and females at 18."
John was 69 years of age when he died.
