- Barachiah moved from Chilmark to Falmouth about 1760. His estate was valued at $2690.90. An old
list of grants for military service shows he had considerable land in southern Ohio.
Barachiah served in the Expedition against Fort Ticonderoga in July
1758, but was not named on the Muster Roll. His being there is shown by the
petition of "Bar'iah Bassett" for reimbursement of costs and losses suffered
by him from having taken into his boat on the return trip from Albany a
sick man who developed small-pox, which desease he himself then took. As Capt.
Barachiah Bassett, he served in Nova Scotia in 1760, being at Lunenburg in
March. The Company Roll also carried the name of his brother Fortunatus
Bassett. Probably about the time of his return from this service, he took up
his residence at Falmouth. He was on the Committee of Correspondence in May
1775. He was Major of the Massachusetts Militia. He was Lt. Col in Jan 1776 of the
14th Mass. under Col. Gamaliel Bradford and Brig Gen John Patterson, 1777-1778
on service at West Point, with Washington at Valley Forge, retired 1 Jan 1781
with an excellent record. He also commanded the brig "Falmouth" of 3 guns, 4
swivels and 30 men in 1782.
