Marshall Coshocton Democrat Standard, July 21, 1899 Mr. John D. Bassett Mr. John D. Bassett, one of Plainfield's eldest, died suddenly at his home in that village, last Saturday morning. He had retired the night before in the apparent enjoyment of usual health. At about 7 o'clock, Saturday morning his daughter noticed that he was in distress. All that could be done to afford relief was resorted to, but to no purpose as he sank rapidly, and in that short space of an hour after his indisposition become noticeable, his spirit took its flight from earth, his death being attributed to heart disease. The deceased was well advanced in his 85th year, and had long been a resident of Plainfield. Mr. Bassett was a soldier in the late Civil War and had been twice married, both wives having preceded him to the grave. The funeral which was a very large one, took place last Sunday, interment being made in the old Presbyterian church burial ground, near Plainfield. Sample entry in the Birthday Book for Myra Wilcox Bassett, wife of Herbert Hoxie Bassett Below is a letter written about Henry Dwight Bassett. September 27, 1971 The attached is a history of the forge shop and carriage factory at "The Glen" at Unadilla Forks, New York, where the tools were made by hand. Henry Wilcox (and Parley Phillips) built the Unadilla Forks home in 1828. Henry Dwight Bassett (Uncle Doc) married Flora E. Wilcox and went to live in the Unadilla home at the time of the death of Flora's father (Henry Wilcox) in 1874. Henry Wilcox had probably started the carriage factory before this, but Henry Dwight Bassett continued with the help of John Spring, who lived with them as a member of the family. All the old tools were collected from the old barn where the carriage factory used to stand. Elizabeth Paige Bassett (Mrs. H. Bassett, Rockport, Massachusetts Dock Scene 1940 George Grier Bassett (1870 - 1970) Philadelphia Architects and Buildings Born: 3/30/1870 Died: 6/27/1970 George Grier Bassett may be Philadelphia's only centenarian architect. He was born in Salem, NJ, the son of Richard and Lydia Ann (Grier) Bassett. After an education in private schools and with tutors, he came to Philadelphia and in 1889 entered the office of Theophilus Parsons Chandler as a draftsman. By 1893 he had joined the firm of Baily & Truscott and by 1902 was a partner in that firm. After Arthur Truscott resigned from the firm in 1904, Bassett's name replaced his in the partnership, creating Baily & Bassett. This association continued until William Bailey's retirement in 1930/1. The dissolution of the partnership freed Bassett to travel extensively in the United States and abroad, where he devoted himself to painting in both oils and watercolors. Like his partner, William L. Baily, Bassett was a member of the Society of Friends. He had joined the T-Square Club in 1892, the Philadelphia Chapter of the AIA in 1905, and the national AIA in 1910. Written by Sandra L.
