July 10 – William Bassett Jr.

He was born in Charleston, Montgomery county, N.Y., in May 1808. In 1833 he came to Ohio; and in 1840, and at a camp meeting held at York-Street, at Granville circuit, Licking county, O., he was awakened to a sense of his lost condition, as a sinner, under a discourse delivered by the Rev. Thomas Perkinks. He discovered that he had been seeking almost every thing else, but never yet had been happy. He had, from a child, been reared under the influence of Universalism, and embraced it as a favorite system; but when awakened to his situation as a sinner, he resolved to lay aside his false theory, and seek salvation by faith alone. This he experienced to his comfort. After a lapse of sometime, he became cold in religion, and to some extent lost its enjoyment, but never entirely his confidence. Some time last winter, he was taken with an affection of the lungs, which terminated his earthly career. During his affliction he was patient and tranquil, often praising the Lord for the prospect of a blissful immortality.
