Eugene F. Bassett Dies At Age Of 83

      Eugene F. Bassett, 83, of 24 Crossman St., owner and operator of Bassett’s Jewelry Store for more than 50 years, died early Monday evening (Jan. 21, 1963).

Born in Castile on Sept. 24, 1879, the son of Charles and Loretta Bassett, he married the former Violetta Hanvey on Dec. 25, 1901. Mrs. Bassett died Aug. 8, 1956.

He was a member of Mr. Moriah Lodge, F. and A.M. and of the Jamestown Commandery. He also was the holder of a 50-year membership award in the Odd Fellows Lodge and belonged to the First Methodist Church.

Survivors are three nephews, Melvin Bassett of Perry; Lowell Bassett of Albany; and Raymond Hughes of Jamestown; one niece, Mrs. Glenn Fuller of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a brother-in-law, Dr. C.A. Hanvey of Lakewood; and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Jennie Hughes of Jamestown.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Henderson-Lincoln Funeral Home with the Rev. Sherman Epler, associate minister of the First Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
